The city of Djerba should feature on every visitor's list. Djerba - around 300
kilometres south of Sousse and Monastir - is actually an island, joined to the
mainland by a causeway, and perched at the southern end of the Gulf of Gabes.
Today its coastline consists mainly of beautiful sandy beaches while, inland,
mosques and houses are scattered among uniform palm groves.
The island's capital, Houmt Souk, has plenty to offer tourists: the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions and several mosques including the Mosque of the Turks and the Mosque of the Strangers.
A
lively spot to visit is the Place Hedi Chaker, a square with many cafes and
restaurants. The beach has riding ranches, watersports, paragliding and camel
riding. The course in Djerba is also a noteworthy addition to Tunisia's overall
golf project.
Designed by - renowned British architect Martin Hawtree, it is a mix of both links golf and Spanish country-style golf, and offers three nine-hole layouts to play. Perhaps the club's most interesting feature, however, is the David Leadbetter Golf Academy.
Featuring techniques such as one-on-one teaching with experienced professionals, the academy is one of a growing number of such 'schools' opening all over the world. There is no other David Leadbetter Academy in North Africa - which is a testimony to the quality and standard of Djerba's one and only golf club.
